No more than carrying a couple of adults would – the base vehicle (VW Transporter) is pretty fuel efficient (36.7mpg as standard)

IS THE POD INSULATED?

Yes we use latest insulation technology to deliver the equivalent of approx. 4" of standard household insulation.

DOES IT AFFECT ROAD TAX?

We went to Cardiff to get an exclusive look at the new VW Doubleback T5 California camper van to see how it shapes up as a means of carrying our bikes around and as a living space for relaxing post ride. Sold as a new T5 van, the Doubleback increases available space by nearly two meters when fully extended and allows for weights of up to 400 Kgs to be carried. The back extends electronically at the push of a button. You can carry 4 bikes in the back, and there's plenty of room for surf, ski or other outdoor kit. Seems like a pretty nifty vehicle for your outdoor sports needs. Company director and DoubleBack designer Craig McCormack gives us the lowdown.

We don't usually do stories about motor vehicles, but we reckon the new DoubleBack VW campervan is worth a look, given how popular the traditional campervan is with weekend riders. As you can see from the video below, the DoubleBack looks like a VW Transporter T5, but at the push of a button its rear end expands to nearly double the size (insert inappropriate joke here). We can think of a few uses for this, like keeping your bikes secure while you get some rest in the middle of a 24 hour enduro. Or just extra space to sleep and cook in so you don't have to pitch a tent. Unfortunately, size isn't the only thing that doubles: the DoubleBack VW retails for £55,000, which is nearly double the cost of a normal Transporter T5. The same applies to availability - expect to wait until the second half of the year to get one if you order it now from the Welsh-based company.
