Create a comprehensive registry of bicycles to fight theft and save the world.

It's too easy to sell stolen bikes and too difficult to report bike theft.

Let's end that!

The Bike Index permanently registers your bike and partners with bike shops and organizations to make registration convenient.
The Bike Index was built to help the bike community

The Index was created because we were frustrated by the prevalence of bike theft and by everyone's fatalistic response to it. We regularly saw people trying to sell stolen bikes, and would search for the bikes online—but it was too difficult to find good information about them.

So we started building an online registry designed to encourage people to register their bikes before they were stolen, that worked with shops and cyclists to make sure everyone who needed it could access the information.

Use the Index to:

Create a public record of your bike online
Protect your privacy by separating personal data from your bike information.
Take control over your bike's information (update the record as your bike evolves)
Transfer bike registrations for free to verify any bike you buy or sell.
Basically, the Bike Index does everything but pedal your bike for you.

The Bike Index works with you and bike organizations to protect your bike

We're an awesome, functioning, open source bike registry. The bike shops who have access to the Bike Index have been using it to regularly register bikes.

We want to give shops everywhere the ability to register bikes for free, so every bike is registered before it leaves the shop.

With your support we'll be able to dedicate the time and resources we need to improve and expand the Bike Index:

Travel to the eleven biggest bike cities in the United States to meet with shop owners and give them the ability to register bikes for free (the cities: NYC, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Philadelphia, Madison, Tucson, Austin, Denver, D.C., and Minneapolis).
Improve the registration process to automatically include stock components on registration.
Offer region specific recommendations for reporting bike theft to the police.
Integrate with StolenBikeRegistry, Chicago.StolenBikes and other existing services to create a universal search for stolen bikes.
There have been a number of reports this summer highlighting the need for a good registration system.

Cities have been talking about building their own registries, from San Fransisco because "currently, it is very difficult for the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) to reunite recovered bikes and their owners" to Sacramento, Evanston, Seattle and Denver (where they highlight that "the recovery rate for a stolen bike is higher if it has been registered").

Let's work together to create a registry that works everywhere and is universally accessible.

We're giving our supporters a chance to show the world that they care about bike theft and want to work toward a solution.
