23-year-old victim in Tahoe hit-and-run dies

TAHOE CITY, Calif. — The victim in a hit-and-run accident last week near Lake Tahoe’s North Shore has died, an official confirmed Thursday.
James Hulett, 23, of Boulder, Colo., was riding a bicycle at about 5:05 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, westbound on Highway 28 up Dollar Hill when he was struck by a 1991 Ford Explorer driven by Vicente Rojas Araujo, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Hulett was ejected from his bicycle and struck the roadway, suffering “major head trauma,” according to CHP. He was transported via CareFlight helicopter to Renown Regional Medical Center.
Hulett died Thursday, CHP Public Information Officer Pete Mann confirmed in an email to the Sierra Sun.
According to a previous report, Araujo, 53, of Kings Beach, initially fled the scene, but turned himself in at about 7:30 p.m. at the Placer County Sheriff’s Office substation in Tahoe City.
Araujo was arrested on a felony charge of hit and run causing death/injury and was transported to the Placer County Jail in Auburn, said Dena Erwin, public information officer for the sheriff’s office.
Araujo’s bail initially was set at $75,000; he remained in jail as of Thursday on “no bail hold,” Erwin said, in lieu of an investigation by Immigration Customs Enforcement officials regarding Araujo’s status as a legal citizen.
A request seeking more information from the Placer County District Attorney’s office was not immediately returned for this story.
Neither alcohol nor drugs are considered a factor in the collision, which remains under investigation. It’s unclear why Araujo, also traveling westbound, drifted off the highway and struck Hulett, according to CHP.
It’s also unknown if Hulett was wearing a helmet.
Anyone with information should contact the Truckee CHP office at 530-582-7570 and ask for Officer Roid.
