Run Free - Spirit Animals

In the book Born to Run, the original 'mas locos' are all referred to by their spirit animal names. In this video, Caballo Blanco explains how wand why they were given their spirit animal names, and why Barefoot Ted is The Monkey.
This is a bonus video from the movie Run Free - The True Story of Caballo Blanco.

MICAH TRUE

Micah True, or Caballo Blanco (The White Horse), was an ultra-runner from Boulder, CO who lived and ran with the Tarahumara Indians of Northern Mexico. He created a unique 50-mile foot race to help the Tarahumara Indians preserve their running culture. The race was featured in the 2009 best-selling book "Born to Run - A Hidden Tribe, Super Athletes and the Greatest Race the World has Never Seen" by Christopher McDougall.

THE TARAHUMARA

The Tarahumara (or Raramuri) are an indigenous people of Mexico known for their long distance running abilities. Today, there are numerous threats to their survival including drought, deforestation, resource exploitation, loss of native lands and the drug war raging across Mexico.

THE RACE

The Ultra Marathon Caballo Blancois a 50-mile foot race that draws hundreds of Raramuri to the small village of Urique. All of the runners who complete the race win 500 pounds of corn. The top ten finishers (men and women) also receive significant prize money.

THE MOVIE

Filmed over the course of five years, our movie tells the story of this amazing race through the eyes of its founder Micah True and the participants in the race (Mas Loco). Because Micah True died shortly after the race featured in this film, this is the only footage of it's kind in the world, where Micah True tells his own story in his own words.

PARTICIPANTS IN THE FILM

We've already filmed several people for the documentary including Micah True, Barefoot Ted, Scott Jurek, Luis Escobar, dozens of Mas Locos and several of Caballo's friends in Boulder, CO.

THE MUSIC

Were really excited to have a great musician onboard our project. His name is Trace Bundy and he is a phenomenal guitarist from Micah's hometown of Boulder, CO. Much of the music in our film is from Trace's albums including Elephant King, Missile Bell and Adapt.

BUDGET

Our total production cost is approximately $150K. We've already raised over 30% of this through the donation of time, services and equipment of the filmmakers. We want to jumpstart fundraising the remainder of this by involving YOU - the people who know and love our story and what it means to the world!

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

So far we've made three trips overland into the canyons and four flights across the USA which resulted in more than 60 hours of interviews and race footage. All of the footage has been logged and digitized. We've created a rough cut and our movie is now in the final editing stage. We've done everything on our own up until this point but we can't continue without your help. We are looking for funds that will enable us to pay our crew, equipment rental, graphics, titles, music licensing, audio post production, color correction and distributing the movie through a website and film festivals.

Please consider supporting our fundraising campaign through Kickstarter and remember - if we don't hit our goal we will receive NOTHING!
