Las 30 mejores vacaciones ciclistas

ENJOY THE RIDE: 30 of the world’s best cycling holidays for 2015
By Graeme Green

Is there a better way to explore a country than on two wheels? Cycling adventures go beyond the big tourist sights, a chance to experience the real country – epic mountain passes, rural villages, rugged coastlines, local people, unique wildlife… –, with the added bonus of giving the heart and limbs a workout. We’ve collected together 30 of the most exciting cycling and mountain biking trips from around the world for 2015, including Cuba, Burma, India, Italy, Colombia, Namibia and more. Your next cycling adventure starts here…
(* We’ve arranged a SPECIAL DEAL for Curious Animal readers: quote discount code ‘CAbike’ when booking any of the trips below to get 5% off the price. Book before May 31, 2015.)

CUBA
Is 2015 the last chance to see the real Cuba? With relations thawing between the United States and Cuba, change is on its way. Soak up the atmosphere of music, beaches, old cars and revolutionary history on a cycling trip that runs the length of the Caribbean island, starting from Havana and taking in the Bay of Pigs, Trinidad, the Sierra Maestra Mountains and Santiago de Cuba (birthplace of the Cuban revolution), before finishing – perhaps with a celebratory cigar – back in Havana.

> Moderate
> £1,499pp (approx. $2,314). (Quote discount code ‘CAbike’ when booking to get 5% off.)

BURMA
Change is happening in Burma, too, though it can be hard to tell in the untouched rural areas between the country’s tourist sites. Journey across central Burma from the Shan Plateau down to the banks of the Irrawaddy River, with plenty of time to explore Inle Lake (famous for the leg-rowing fishermen), the city of Mandalay, the caves of Pindaya filled with thousands of Buddha statues, the hilltop monastery of Mt Popa and the ancient temples of Bagan. The trip starts and end in Yangon, home to the country’s holiest site Shwedagon Pagoda.
> 14 days (dates in March, May, July, August, September…)
> Moderate
> $3,550pp (approx. £2,300). (Quote discount code ‘CAbike’ when booking to get 5% off.)

Make the challenging climb to the Monastery of Fonte Avellana and explore Assisi and Spello, as well as castles, abbeys and Italy’s largest cave. With visits to vineyards along the way, there’s plenty of opportunity to get a flavour of the country’s famous vino too.

One of South America’s most fascinating and dramatic countries, Colombia is perfect for some road bike action. The challenging route from historic Avignon takes in the Mediterranean Sea at Saint-Paul-de-Vence, plus the rocky Luberon, the Gorges du Verdon and the famous vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. If you’re up for it, take on the optional ascent of the ‘Giant of Provence’ (Mont Ventoux).

VIETNAM
Travel between Vietnam’s two biggest cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, taking in the historical city of Hue (a traveller favourite), the hilltribe villages of Mai Chau and the backroads of Quy Nhon. The most memorable day’s ride though is likely to be the epic Hai Van Pass (Ocean Cloud Pass), a slow tough uphill climb that’s rewarded with a long, fun roll downhill on the other side.

YUCATAN PENINSULA, MEXICO
Many come to this region just to laze on the beach. We’d rather get out and explore on a bike. Follow the Yucatan’s backroads through colourful villages, stopping to explore Mayan pyramids, temples and other places on the way, including the famous Chichen Itza, the lesser known Tulum and Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Then make your way to the idyllic Riviera Maya to unwind from a week in the saddle with chillout time on Caribbean beaches and snorkelling on the world’s longest coral reef.

SOUTHWEST CHINA
Forget the smog and the crowded space-age cities, and instead cycle into the heart of rural China, to Guilin and Guangxi, where farmers work in lush rice paddies and mist hovers over mountain peaks. This is a great trip for cyclists wanting to immerse themselves in another time and place. Starting from the pretty city of Guilin, venture out into the surrounding landscapes of limestone karsts, farmland, pine forests and ancient riverside villages. The journey takes in the UNESCO heritage site of Bajiaozhai National Park, the Yuecheng Mountains and the tea plantations of Dragon River Valley, plus a gentle float down the Li river on a bamboo raft. You’ll also encounter various local peoples, including the Dong, Yao and Miao, en route to the final destination, the backpacker hub town of Yangshuo.

WEST COAST, IRELAND
Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way was one of 10 destinations that made it onto our 2015 Adventure Travel ‘Hot List’. You’ll see plenty of it on this ride along the country’s west coast, including the rugged coastline of Connemara and Country Galway, a loop around the striking Cliffs of Moher, and the greenery of Kerry and Killarney National Park, with opportunities along the way to sample the coast’s excellent seafood, lively traditional music and pub culture.

MONGOLIA
Horseback might be the traditional way to explore the land of Genghis Khan, but I’d happily settle for a bike. Mongolia has a lot to offer mountain bike enthusiasts, with dramatic untouched landscapes, including vast valleys viewed from 2,100 metres above sea level as you pedal through the Khangai Mountain range with only wild yaks, sheep, horses and goats and the region’s friendly nomads for company. You’ll also be riding through ruins from the ancient Mongolian Empire and cooling off at the Orkhon river and Ulaan Tsutgalan waterfall. Less than 20 kilometres of this 406km trip is on paved roads, so this is one for mountain bikers who like off-road adventure. It’s worth checking out the July trip in particular as it coincides with the famous Nadaam Festival, a chance to see traditional Mongolian sorts including archery, wrestling and horse racing.
> 14 days (dates in May, July & Aug)
> Challenging
> $3,350 (approx. £2,158). (Quote discount code ‘CAbike’ when booking to get 5% off.)

SOUTH AFRICA & BOTSWANA
Biking in Botswana? I didn’t know that was possible. This mountain biking journey in southern Africa is a safari with a difference, checking out the Big 5 and other wildlife from the saddle (with support van and armed guards on hand). Start in South Africa’s Misty Mountain, up at 2000 metres in the Drakensberg Mountains, exploring Bushmans Trail, Goldrush and other old mining trails around Mt Anderson. Then cross over into Botswana and ‘the Land of the giants’, Mashatu, the largest privately owned game reserve in the country, where the open savannah and Limpopo River provide likely encounters with elephants, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra and occasionally lions and leopards.
> 10 days (dates in May, Aug, Sept…)
> Moderate/Challenging
> £1,450pp (approx. $953.80). (Quote discount code ‘CAbike’ when booking to get 5% off.)

LAOS
Discover one of Southeast Asia’s off-the-beaten-track gems. After a warm-up ride in northern Thailand’s Chaing Mai, cross the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Burma meet, and explore the Buddha caves, home to thousands of Buddha images, the brilliantly laidback city of Luang Prabang (a big hit with backpackers) and the incredible Kuang Si waterfalls, before cycling south through the party (and tubing) town of Vang Vieng to the capital Vientiene.
> 16 days (dates in Aug, Oct, Nov, Dec…)

COAST-TO-COAST, COSTA RICA
Traverse the lush green landscapes of Costa Rica, starting out from the Caribbean coast and riding along banana trails, through rainforests and rivers, taking in the active Arenal Volcano en route. This trip also includes two days of wild whitewater adventure on the mighty Pacuare River, with Class 3-5 rapids.

The trip also includes a hike up Mt Etna, the highest volcano in Europe, before riding across the volcanic Aeolian Islands to hike, swim, and bike among Il Postino filming locations, enjoying the good life – food, wine and music – all the way.

You’ll have plenty of time to explore Angkor Wat and other temples in the heart of Cambodia on a cycle journey that takes in three Southeast Asian countries: Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Start out from one of the world’s liveliest cities, Bangkok, and complete a warm-up ride in Kaho Yai National Park, riding south through Thailand into Cambodia towards Siem Reap and the Angkor temple complexes. With the recent construction of single lane roads, there are now exciting routes across the mountains for adventurous cyclists too. After a cycling tour of Kathmandu and Bhaktapur, fly into Jomsom and saddle up on a mountain bike to explore the spectacular trails of the Kali Gandaki Valley, the deepest gorge in the world, set between the two 8000m peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Descend through rural villages for a well-earned rest in the lakeside traveller hub Pokhara, before continuing along the southern section of the Annapurna Circuit to the ancient town of Gorkha.
