John Kerry in Geneva hospital after bike accident in nearby France

(CNN)U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry broke his right femur in a cycling accident in Scionzier, France, on Sunday morning, State Department spokesman John Kirby said.

The injury is near the site of a previous hip surgery, so Kerry will return to Boston on Sunday for treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital with his doctor who did the prior surgery, the spokesman said in a statement.

He was not, as reported earlier, en route to Boston on Sunday morning. Though a senior State Department official originally said that was the case, Kirby later said Kerry was resting comfortably at a Geneva hospital, where he would remain for the rest of the afternoon. He will depart for Boston on Sunday evening, Kirby said.

"In the interest of time, and so as not to further delay those traveling with him, we will dispatch his aircraft back to the United States with the traveling party aboard," he said, adding that Kerry will fly on a plane "outfitted to ensure he remains comfortable and stable."

Kerry regrets that he won't be able to visit Spain as planned, and he also won't be able to attend the Paris counter-ISIL coalition ministerial meeting on Tuesday. He will participate in the Paris meeting remotely, Kirby said.

(ISIL is another name for the terror network, ISIS.)

The secretary is stable, his injury is not life-threatening and he should make a full recovery, Kirby said.

"Secretary Kerry is in good spirits and is grateful to the French and Swiss authorities, doctors, and nurses who assisted him after the accident," the spokesman said.

It can take six months or more for a femur, the thighbone, to heal, depending on the nature of the break, according to orthopedic websites.

Kerry was flown by helicopter to a hospital in nearby Geneva, Switzerland, for examination, Kirby said earlier.

"Paramedics and a physician were on the scene with the Secretary's motorcade at the time of the accident," Kirby said. He received initial medical care at the site of the crash.

Kerry had traveled to Geneva for negotiations with Iranian diplomats on that country's nuclear program. He was cycling about 30 miles from the city, which is close to France.

The secretary is an avid cyclist who also took his bike to the region in March, when he met previously with Iranian diplomats.

Kerry injured his shoulder in a 1992 cycling accident.

Alistair Brownlee busts out home British win

By Chelsea White on 31/05/15 at 11:40 am
Making his home country proud, Alistair Brownlee (GBR) captured a breakaway win at the 2015 ITU World Triathlon London on Sunday. With the familiar crowd cheering him on in Hyde Park as he crossed the finish line at 50:39, the Brit was able to tally his second WTS victory of the season.
Taking the silver medal was Spain’s Fernando Alarza, who claimed his first WTS podium of the year. He was followed by Vincent Luis of France with the bronze. Luis’ performance earned him his third podium position of the season after a second-place finish in Abu Dhabi and third-place finish in Cape Town earlier in the year.
Lining up for the sprint race, the typical London weather left the men with particularly cold-temperature conditions to get through the short one-lap swim, four-lap bike and two-lap run course. Wetsuits in tow, Henri Schoeman (RSA) and Richard Varga (SVK) led the 750-kilometre swim and into the first transition.
Despite coming out of the water with a respectable position, home turf advantage could not swing in favour of Jonathan Brownlee (GBR) as a mechanical problem on the bike forced him to lose his momentum and leaderboard position.
The bike malfunction saw the younger Brownlee fall more than a minute behind on the first of four laps. Meanwhile older brother Alistair led the lead pack around Hyde Park alongside the likes of Aaron Royle (AUS) and Vincent Luis (FRA) in an 18-man pack.
Expert sprinters Mario Mola (ESP) and Richard Murray (RSA) also missed the first group and were forced to start from a deficit on the two-lap run.
Luis and Brownlee continued their quest for a podium as they took the top spot early on the 2-lap run. But Alistair left nothing to chance and blasted away on the first lap to create an insurmountable gap. A gap that would lead him right into the finish line and right into the position of hearing Great Britain’s national anthem alongside his national people.
With two medals still up for grabs, the last lap of the run saw a battle between Alarza, Luis and Ryan Baile (AUS) all pushing til the end. But ultimately it was Alarza and Luis who were able to exert a last-minute effort to take home the silver and bronze.
Despite his absence, Javier Gomez Noya (ESP) maintained his Columbia Threadneedle leader position in the rankings after winning his first WTS race in Yokohama, Japan on May 16.
