Fernando Alonso: McLaren-Honda 2015

2015 McLaren-Honda driver Fernando Alonso talks about the season ahead, the 2015 MP4-30 chassis, his new team-mate Jenson Button, and the significance of the McLaren-Honda partnership, which is reunited for the first time in 22 years.

Time to Make History: McLaren-Honda MP4-30

It’s been 22 years since McLaren and Honda last raced together, forming a near-unbeatable partnership that dominated Formula 1 in the 1980s and ’90s. The racing landscape may have changed immeasurably since the days of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, but there are still clear links that bind the two manufacturers together.

McLaren-Honda: a new era begins

On 29/01/15, the new McLaren-Honda era will officially begin.

McLaren-Honda. For all Formula 1 fans, there’s something inescapably special about the way those two words sit alongside each other.

For McLaren fans in particular, it evokes an era when our fabulous red and white racing cars were driven by icons Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost – and were usually driven to victory, too.

Even now, we’re extremely proud that our Honda-powered cars remain as iconic as those other 1980s’ icons, Dynasty, Pac-Man, deely boppers (Google ’em!), Thatcher, Reagan and Back To The Future.

Of course, McLaren Honda has its sights set firmly on future success. But, as we rattle off the days before the launch of the new MP4-30, we thought it would be fun to kick off our 2015 campaign with a playful look back at that golden era…

Jenson and Fernando: Back to the Racetrack

Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads, but we do need racetracks…”

McLaren-Honda drivers Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button get ready for the 2015 season with an unlikely encounter with something that looks more than a little reminiscent of one of the movie world’s most famous time machines.

Equipped with a shiny silver McLaren 650S, the duo are faced with the ultimate question on the lips of any racing driver: ‘Would I rather have driven in grands prix gone by, or should I cast my eyes to the horizon and aim for the future?”

The answer, they learn, is clearcut – but can they fit the MP4-30 with a flux capacitor…?

McLaren-Honda: a new era

Between 1988 and 1992, McLaren-Honda dominated Formula 1, winning 44 grands prix and eight world championships. In 2015, that partnership will be reforged. As we get ready for our new era in F1, we invite you inside the garage to witness first-hand the reunion of McLaren and Honda, and watch the MP4-29H/1X1 take to the track for its first ever run.

McLaren and Honda unveil 2015 F1 car

By Scott Collie February 1, 2015

The MP4-30 will debut at the Australian GP in March

For long-time Formula One fans, the combination of McLaren and Honda will bring back fond memories of the epic battles shared by Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. Although they were teammates, their great rivalry created some of the best racing F1 has ever seen, and a golden era for McLaren. Now the McLaren-Honda combination is back, with McLaren's 2015 chassis to be powered by Honda's RA615H power unit.

The MP4-30 marks a return to the partnership between McLaren and Honda in F1Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso will pilot the carMcLaren has given the 2015 car a slimmer rear endMcLaren were winless in 2014, a record they will desperately want to rectify in 2015View all
The car that Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button will pilot in 2015 is called the MP4-30. McLaren says that "relatively stable regulations" after the massive technical changes in 2014 has allowed it to evolve the car that finished off last year's season. The MP4-30's carbon-composite body features "slimmed rear-end packaging" and a revised nose, while underneath there's a brand new powertrain setup.

A 1.6-liter V6 is at the heart of all F1 cars' powertrain
That brand new powertrain will be up against units from Ferrari, Renault and Mercedes on the grid. Mercedes dominated last season with an ingenious solution to turbo packaging that allowed for a narrower rear end, better weight distribution and more efficient engine cooling, so it will be interesting to see how the MP4-30 stacks up.

As-per F1 regulations, Honda's RA615H combines a turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 engine, rev limited to 15,000 rpm. Maximum fuel flow is limited to 100kg/hour, a rule that caught Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo out in last year's season-opening Melbourne GP, while cars are only allowed 100 kg of fuel per-race, making economy a key (often race-deciding) factor.

After a win-less season and disappointing 5th place in the 2014 Constructors' Championship, McLaren will be hoping for a far stronger showing in the 2015 season.

Ron Dennis, McLaren's Chairman and CEO, is confident that the new partnership will allow both brands to get back to "winning Grands Prix and eventually World Championships as McLaren-Honda."

Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso will have their work cut out for them chasing the domina...
"We've come a long way already and, although there's lots of work to do before we can enjoy the level of success we enjoyed together 25-or-so years ago, it's already clear there's enormous synergy and potential in our partnership," he said.

The world's F1 fans will be hoping Ron is right. Mercedes turned much of 2014 into a procession, only broken by a smattering of wins for Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo. If McLaren can consistently provide a fast car for Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso to challenge with, Mercedes will have strong company at the front of the grid, hopefully allowing for closer racing than we saw last year.

F1 kicks off in March with the Australian GP in Melbourne.
