A MAN fighting for life in hospital after a Surfers Paradise balcony plunge has been revealed as a top extreme sportsman.

BMX rider Dane Searls is in a critical condition in the Gold Coast Hospital after he apparently tried to jump into the swimming pool at Surfers Paradise nightspot Billy's Beach House on Sunday night.

Searls, 23, is regarded as one of the world's best BMX riders, renowned for gravity-defying jumps off giant dirt mounds.

His major sponsor, Gold Coast-based Unit Clothing, confirmed he had been 'badly hurt in a non-riding accident'.
``We need everyone's positive energy, prayers and strength right now for our brother Dane Searls,'' the company said in a statement.

``All his family and mates are by his side. Please send your support and best wishes to him.''

Police said they were investigating whether Billy's Beach House had breached safety and responsible service of alcohol laws.

The incident followed a fatal fall from a Surfers Paradise balcony yesterday that claimed the life of a man in his 30s.

Dane Searls has proven himself as one of the world's best big dirt jump riders. In his quest to push himself and BMX dirt jumping further, Dane has teamed up with Unit Clothing to develop the Giants Of Dirt project.

The construction and first ride took place in August, at Matt Schubring's Boonah property, located in Australia. The set up was totally untested, and Dane took a massive slam in his attempt to clear the whole set-up. He walked away and immediately began planning another attempt.

After months of bad weather, Dane headed back out to the massive jumps, and worked along side Matt Schubring to bring the jumps up to standard and ready to ride. Part 2 of the Giants Of Dirt project documents Dane's next big attempt!

Dane Searls critically injured in accident
Australian dirt rider Dane Searls, the mastermind behind the Unit Clothing 'Giants of Dirt' long range dirt jumping project, is in critical condition in Australia's Gold Coast Hospital after he apparently tried to jump into a swimming pool at Surfers Paradise night club Billy's Beach House on Sunday night, according to Australian newspaper The Courier Mail.

Searls' sponsor, Unit Clothing, confirmed that he had been "badly hurt in a non-riding accident," adding that Searls, 23, needed "everyone's positive energy, prayers and strength right now" in a company statement.

Unit Clothing team manager Ryan Guettler added via Twitter that, "Dane Searls is a champion but right now he needs everyone's thoughts going his way to get him out of this coma."

Reports of Searls' coma are unconfirmed.

Searls rose to worldwide BMX notoriety after creating the 'Giants of Dirt' dirt jump course alongside sponsor Unit Clothing in 2010. The project, a series of dirt jumps that rivaled the biggest dirt jumps in the world, created a mild viral sensation on YouTube and catapulted Searls into the worldwide BMX spotlight. On Searls' last attempt at riding the jumps in November 2010, he snapped his bike in half. He had planned to return to the course in the days after breaking his bike, but was unable to because of flooding throughout the Gold Coast area.
