NEWAYGO COUNTY, MI -- A pedestrian who was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash near Bitely is the same person who police say was the driver in a July car-cyclist crash that killed well-known Grand Rapids photographer Jeff Dykehouse.Newaygo County Undersheriff Brian Boyd confirmed that Steven Jones, 61, was the person involved in the July 9 crash on Egypt Valley Avenue NE that killed Dykehouse, 51.
Prosecutors had just recently received toxicology results from the July crash and were in discussions about whether to charge Jones. He initially was arrested for suspicion of drunken driving, but released the following day pending the toxicology tests. The results showed no alcohol or drugs in his system.
Jones lived near Woodland Lake, south of Bitely, but worked in the Grand Rapids area.Dykehouse was a Grand Rapids photographer known for taking portraits of families with gravely ill children. He also was featured in a Grand Rapids Press series on justifiable homicides after he shot an intruder in his home.Kent County sheriff's deputies said Dykehouse was riding a bicycle north on Egypt Valley Avenue NE, between Three Mile and Four Mile roads, when he was struck from behind by an SUV driven by Jones. The crash that killed Jones happened about 7 a.m. Wednesday, police say. He was walking east on 11 Mile Road, west of North Bingham Road, when he was struck.
There were no witnesses to the crash and the vehicle left the scene. A passerby found the body, partially in the roadway, at 7:18 a.m. and called 911.Boyd said it's too early to say whether Jones' death was more than a simple hit-and-run crash."Of course people are going to bring up the theory that this is retribution," he said. "But we're not going to make any assumptions at this point."
"We're going to look at every aspect of this," he said.
