Collegiate cyclist, 29, dies in Washington race

Randall Fox, 29, of Corvallis, Oregon, died at a collegiate road race near Flaming Geyser State Park, Washington Saturday. University of Washington was hosting the three-race omnium weekend, which also included a team time trial and a Sunday criterium. The details surrounding Fox’s death are unclear, but USA Cycling verified the incident Monday morning on Twitter and Facebook.

USA Cycling posted the following on Facebook:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Randall Fox, who died Saturday in Washington while competing for Oregon State. His untimely and tragic death is heartbreaking, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and teammates.”

Cindi West, sergeant media relations officer at the King County Sheriff’s office confirmed that after being transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, a cyclist died Saturday after crashing in a race. According to the police report, he lost control of the bicycle and collided with guardrail on a downhill, sustaining critical injuries.

Fox was a PhD candidate and graduate teaching assistant at Oregon State University, specializing thermal-fluid sciences.
