En una emocionante final élite, José Antonio Hermida se ha proclamado campeón del mundo de BTT en los Mundiales de Mont-Sainte Anne, aventajando en 29 segundos al checo Jaroslav Kulhavy y en 1-10 al sudafricano Burry Stander. Excelentes también Carlos Coloma, sexto, e Iván Alvarez, décimo.
Había sido campeón del mundo junior en Cairns 1996, sub-23 en Sierra Nevada 2000, y tres veces ‘arco iris’ en el team relay -1999, 2000 y 2005. Incluso otras tres veces campeón de Europa (2002, 2004 y 2007) y subcampeón olímpico en Atenas, pero el título absoluto se le resistía: lo más cerca que se había quedado fue un bronce en Livigno 2005. Ahora, con 32 años recién cumplidos, el de Puigcerdá es ya campeón del mundo absoluto, el título que adorna el palmarés del mejor ‘biker’ español de todos los tiempos.

La carrera resultó espectacular, ya que tras dos primeras vueltas de tanteo en las que Kulhavy llevó la delantera, fue en la tercera cuando quedaron por delante el checo, el sudafricano y el español, algo descolgado, mientras que Nino Shurter y Julien Absalon, los dominadores de las últimas ediciones, comenzaban a perder comba.
Al completarse el cuarto giro, Hermida ya había tomado la cabeza, con una leve diferencia sobre sus dos rivales, aunque Kulhavy resistiría hasta la penúltima a escasos segundos del español, que en una grandísima última vuelta se iba a la conquista del arco iris.
Por detrás, otros dos españoles se meterían en el 'top ten'. Por un lado un Carlos Coloma que se mantuvo entre el sexto y el séptimo puesto, para acabar en la mejor posición, a 2-43 del ganador; por otro Iván Álvarez, cuya lucha fue entre la posición novena y la décima, a la que finalmente cayó en la última vuelta, cediendo 4-30. Los otros tres españoles no estuvieron tan afortunados en el circuito canadiense: Iñaki Lejarreta era 31 (a 10-51); Sergio Mantecón, 38 (a 12-55), y Rubén Ruzafa, 46 (a 15-13).
Peor le fue a la representantes femeninas, pues la balear Marga Fullana tuvo que conformarse con la vigésimo séptima plaza y Anna Villar con la trigésimo primera, en una prueba en la que se impuso la polaca Maja Wloszczowska con un tiempo de 1.48:21 horas.
La ciclista polaca aventajó en 48 segundos a la rusa Irina Kalentieva, plata, mientras que la estadounidense Willow Koerber, cerró el podio a 52 segundos de la ganadora.

Los españoles dominaron las finales de trial de los Mundiales de bicicleta de montaña de Mont-Sainte Anne (Canadá), ya que Benito Ros y Abel Mustieles ganaron el oro y la plata en categoría élite, y Ion Areitio logró su primer título mundial en júnior.
Ros terminó primero con 22 puntos de penalización, por los 31 de Mustieles. El holandés Rick Koekoek logró el bronce con 43.
En júnior, Ion Areitio se colgó el oro en la prueba júnior con 14 puntos. Le acompañaron en el podio el alemán Raphael Pils (15) y el francés Marius Merger (20).

The cross-country events at the Mountain Bike World Championships concluded on Saturday with the Elite men. Jose Hermida of Spain took a very popular victory, ahead of Jaroslav Kulhavy (Czech Republic) and Burry Stander (South Africa). Geoff Kabush, in his best ride all season, was the top Canadian in eighth place.
For the first time all week, riders woke to heavy rain, which changed the dynamics of the race significantly, favouring some riders and disappointing others. The rain had backed off by the start of the women's race in the morning, leaving the rock gardens with a slick, slippery film of mud. However, shortly after the start of the men's race, the rain rolled back in for one lap, which was enough to keep the track greasy for the rest of the race. The men raced two start loops and six full laps, for a total of 33 kilometres.
Kulhavy, led defending champion Nino Schurter (Switzerland) into the first lap with a gap on the rest of the field, after Hermida, Julien Absalon (France) and others got caught in a crash at the start and lost places.
Kulhavy set the pace in the early laps with Schurter, and followed by Hermida, as Stander faded a bit and Absalon couldn't quite close the gap. Kabush was working his way up steadily, picking off riders one by one as he moved into the top-ten by mid-race.
Schurter and Kulhavy rode together until the Swiss rider began to run into mechanical problems mid-race, stopping in the pits in both the second and third laps after suffering a flat. This dropped him to 14th by the end of lap three, and he could only recover to fourth by the end of the race.
By the fourth lap the podium was set; the only question was who would get to don the rainbow jersey?
Hermida was getting stronger as the race progressed, and he and Kulhavy dropped Stander for the final time on the fifth lap, leaving two to duke it out for the title.
Both riders looked equally strong, and Kulhavy was coming off a win in the World Cup final a week earlier ... But the Spanish rider started to pull away after the singletrack in the first half of the lap, leading by 12 seconds at the start of the first long climb. He held it through the rock garden descent and added a few more seconds on the switchback second climb. From that point it was a forgone conclusion, and Hermida came into the finish arena with time to get off his bike and walk across the line with it held in the air.
"For 14 years I have been wanting to win this championship," said an emotional Hermida, who often choked up when speaking. "To win here, in the cathedral of mountain bike, it is unbelievable."
"I knew after Windham [World Cup final] that my form was coming along pretty good, and my Team Relay lap was also good. But there are many strong riders here. When it was just [Kulhavy] and me, I wasn't sure, because he still seemed pretty strong, I couldn't tell. But then I got a small gap, it wasn't an attack, and I was able to climb faster than him."
Race Notes:
Geoff Kabush: "It's always been a lottery at the start. I've had a rough season so I didn't have a front row position. I started about 15th, and then there was a crash ..."
"But I put it all out there, it's my best finish of the year, so got to be happy with that, to have my best ride at the world championships. Optimistically I was shooting for something higher, but I think I'm pretty satisfied with how the race went, I can't complain."
About the rain before the race: "It was drier than forecast for sure, but still a little muddy on the rocks and everyone was being cautious on those sections and I could make a little time up there. Maybe it would have favoured me a bit more if had been wetter, but eighth is good for the day."
The Canadian crowd: "It was pretty special [with the crowd], you could barely hear yourself think on the switchback climb."

José Antonio Hermida es el nuevo Campeón del Mundo de Cross-Country. En una carrera dura e intensa, en un circuito tan emblemático y técnico como Mont Sainte Anne (CAN), Hermida ha sacado toda su clase y talento para llevarse el maillot más deseado por cualquier corredor.
El 4 de septiembre del 2010 estaba marcado en el calendario de Hermida desde que acabaron los Mundiales del año anterior, donde fue cuarto. A José siempre se le ha dado bien este circuito y desde que tiene opciones de luchar en cualquier carrera en la que participa había querido llevarse una Copa del Mundo aquí. Hoy ha conseguidor vencer, llevándose un Mundial que le permitirá lucir el maillot de Campéon del Mundo durante un año.
No ha sido una carrera fácil y al igual que él, eran muchos los corredores con opciones, pero el de Multivan-Merida ha sido el de las grandes ocasiones y ha sumado así primer título élite, que se une al de junior y al de sub-23 que ganó en Cains 1996 y Sierra Nevada 2000. No hay que olvidar tampoco los 3 títulos mundiales de Team Relay que José ayudó a ganar a España.
“Esto es como un sueño. Llevo llorando desde que he ganado la carrera. He llorado tras cruzar la línea de meta, en la rueda de prensa, cada vez que hablo por teléfono. Hoy la carrera se ha cruzado cuando me ha pillado la caída de la primera vuelta, pero he podido solventar el problema. Sólo pensaba en ganar; no pensaba si esto era una Copa del Mundo, un Mundial o una carrera nacional”, comenta un Hermida emocionado.
