Potts led the men’s field out of the water with France’s Stephane Poulat nipping at his heels as they ran up the beach.Poulat bike his way to the lead until the closing miles, when Lance Armstrong, predictably worked his way to the front. The seven-time Tour de France winner carried a 2:11 advantage over Potts and Poulat as the trio entered T2.
Armstrong proved to be stubborn, as he held onto a 1:01 leading margin over Potts at the conclusion of the first of two loops of the run. Poulat was running third only 0:16 back of second place at the time. However, Potts made his move early on final loopof the run and started to make significant inroads into Armstrong’s lead.
