reasons-not-to-race-a-deca-ironman-triathlon
1.Your grocery bills will skyrocket. Bobby Brown, an endurance athlete who competed in a 1998 deca-triathlon in Mexico, often rode a stationary bike overnight to prepare for the grueling race conditions. His average training day was five hours of biking, running and swimming, with an occasional seven hours of lap swimming thrown in for good measure. Conservative estimates suggest that a 140-pound man will burn 11,000 calories during an Ironman. Food is fuel, and fuel is money, people!

2. Your family may disown you. Robert Van Meir, a seasoned triathlete, says that his own wife and kids have dealt with hours of “triathlon boredom” as they cheer dad on at another event. That’s not to mention the hours you’ll spend training in solitude, instead of tucking your precious children into bed or kissing your partner goodnight. As if you’d even want to kiss them – endurance training is linked to freaky hormones and decreased libido. And because of your exorbitant grocery bills, let’s hope your kids weren’t counting on college tuition!

3. You won’t make it out alive. In April, a study presented at the American College of Cardiology Scientific Sessions conference claimed that the risk of dying during a triathlon was double the risk of death during a marathon run. Researchers studied 2,846 triathlons and over 922,000 competitors – 14 of whom died. The study described the risk as “small, but not inconsequential.” So, if a triathlon doubles your death risk, then it seems like a deca-triathlon pretty much seals the coffin.

If you want to be extreme, I’m all for it. But where do we draw the line and strike a balance between groceries, family and mortality on the one side – and awesome sweaty endorphin rushes on the other? For those still intent on this ultimate physical test, click here to register for one.
