salida 2013

BIKE: The bike is one big 20-mile loop with 3,300-feet of climbing that goes up-and-down the lower slopes of the West Maui Mountains more than a dozen times. This year several technical single and double track sections have replaced dirt jeep roads. “The new stuff has tight, twisting, sharp corners, space just wide enough for your handlebars, places if you don’t get it right you’ll hit your shoulder on a tree,” said race director Dave Nicholas. “Almost all of the dirt roads have been eliminated on the way to the top and this will appeal to the better bikers. At about the five-mile mark you will pop out on a narrow ridge trail with hundred foot drop offs on either side. Don’t panic – the top is at least 15’ wide and the views of the surrounding forest and hills are simply spectacular. If I didn’t fall off – neither will you. In fact, if you come early and preview the course, bring your camera with you. The scenery is something that not many people get a chance to see.”
Leilani's On The BeachRUN: Once on the 10K run competitors will be faced with a whole lot of climbing while they weave along dirt trails, through Oleander forests, and into 60-foot high ironwood evergreens to an unexpected mountain lake at the 700-foot level. “It descends like a slalom course through high green Bermuda grasses and opens up in spots to expose fantastic views of the Pacific,” said Nicholas. “Obstacles are everywhere, including a technical, steep downhill into a gully where racers will have to jump over and duck under fallen trees, navigate a rocky dry creek, head through thick elephant grass, up a short rope-assisted scramble and along a narrow single track trail with switchbacks that drop all the way down to the beach. The final test of skill and endurance is a calf-busting 250-meter sandy beach run.”
Fastest male and female pro, age group, and Maui resident run times will receive a $100 gift certificate from Leilani's On the Beach.

SPECTATORS GUIDE
The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua is the place to be for both transitions, the finish line, and live race reports. Plus, there’s great food, the Paul Mitchell cut-a-thon, XTERRA Gear shop, Kona Brewing Liquid Aloha Lounge, and a front row seat to one of the greatest spectacles in all of sport - the spontaneous, ecstatic, and sometimes tear-jerking displays of emotion at the finish line.
Swim: The swim starts at D.T. Fleming Beach fronting the Ritz, and there are plenty of great vantage points to watch the mass start from the beach and lawn above. Pros are easy to spot with their identifying swim caps - men in white and women in pink.
T1 and T2: The swim-to-bike and bike-to-run transitions are located just up the beach from the swim start in a big grassy area on the Ritz lawn. The transition area is for competitors only, however, spectators may view the change-over from any position around the boundary.
Bike: Unfortunately, there’s really no place to watch the bike (aside from the first mile out and back) as the course is on private land and not open to the public.
Run: Most of the run course is also on private land with the exception of the leg-burning section of sand just before the finish on Fleming Beach.

IRONMAN TRIATHLON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Hawaii Island (Kona Coast)
Kailua Pier
75-5660 Palani Rd
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii 96740
http://www.ironman.com
Dates
October 11, 2014 6:30am - 11:45pm
The first racers swim at 6:30 a.m. The deadline for all finishers is midnight Saturday.
Description
The top 1,800 triathletes from around the world (50 countries and all 50 States) converge on Kona for this Super Bowl of triathlon events, featuring a 2.4-mile ocean swim off Kailua Pier, a 112-mile bike course to Hawi and a 26.2-mile run. This is the big one – a world-class sports event!
The top triathletes start the swim in Kailua Bay at 6:30 a.m., men first, then women, and then the "age groupers," the everyday people. After the 2.4 mile swim, athletes hop on their bikes and ride up the always hot, generally windy Queen Kaahumanu Highway past the Waikoloa resorts, up to the small town of Hawi. After returning to Kailua Pier area, they start their 26.2-mile marathon.
The top finishers complete the event around 3:30 p.m.; the last official finisher is at midnight. Spectators may enjoy the race anywhere along the course (but note that roads around the area are closed), but being right downtown in Kailua Village is the best way to see the action.
