To become of a member of The 4 Deserts, one must have successfully completed four, 250-kilometer, self-supported footraces across the hottest, coldest, windiest and driest places on Earth, including the Atacama Crossing in Chile, the Gobi March in China, the Sahara Race in Egypt and The Last Desert in Antarctica. There are no exceptions to this rule. To date, eighty one (81) individuals have successfully completed the 4 Deserts.
1st spanish, member of The 4 Deserts
Carlos Garcia Prieto, 46, Spain
National pride rarely comes in to the picture in RacingThePlanet events, which are more about international friendship and the purity of the human experience than flag waving. That said, it’s always nice to be the first from your country to do anything and, as achievements go, there’s little to match the 4 Deserts.
If Carlos Garcia Prieto is carrying the hopes of a nation on his shoulders, then he’s outwardly pretty relaxed about it. Providing he gets through this year’s Sahara Race and Last Desert, the 46-year-old Madrid born architect will become the first Spaniard to complete the 4 Deserts series.
Recently married Carlos – wife Laura Corti is a fellow competitor - completed the Gobi March and Atacama Crossing in 2007, also choosing to explore beyond the 4 Deserts this year by taking part in RacingThePlanet: Vietnam.
"The Gobi March for me was kind of smooth,” he says, reflecting on the differing intensity of his races to date. "I think though that it’s not just a matter of the event, but also of the edition. One year the Gobi March can be soft and the next, it can be the toughest."
Wise words. There is no easy RacingThePlanet event and, as Carlos has highlighted, there are many variables, year to year, even in the same location.
"All runners have bad moments,” says Carlos who treasures his Swiss Army knife and recommends using a sleeping mat. "I normally have short objectives, like ‘arrive at that tree’. It’s step by step and I try to eat, or drink, a little bit more."
Again proving that the Europeans are thinking outside the box when it comes to event food, Carlos favours Parmesan cheese and Spanish Serrano ham over all that dehydrated stuff.
When asked if he’ll feel any sadness when his 4 Deserts journey has finally come to an end, he responds: "No way! I can always start all over again."
