KASK K.31 Crono

A top of the line helmet, offering unsurpassed comfort and fit, together with all Italian styling and manufacture, which incorporates a number of unique design features that make it stand out from the rest. One of the safest, best fitting and most stylish range of cycling helmets available globally. The all-Italian-made KASK helmets are the choice of Team Sky, where no secret is made of the fact that every element has been selected to deliver a winning advantage for the team.

The superior quality of the KASK styling and workmanship that has gone into these helmets is evident in the overall finish and attention to detail in every feature. In particular, the helmet incorporates a unique hinged adjustment system that allows for both size and up/down adjustment, which together comfortably cradle the nape of the neck. The helmet size can be adjusted using either the dial or finger push system. This system also includes ventilated, non-stick pads. Working together, these features give the helmet a superior fit and deliver a feeling of improved security that is quite unlike any other helmet.

Internal pivots and intelligent tail shape makes K.31 ideal for riders who simply cannot get the back of their head down low whether due to inflexibility, shape of the back or just general movement. Hygiene is also well thought through and each helmet has a chin pad protection made of anti-allergic leather. The inner padding is made of two layers of CoolMax and the open cells filter system which draws perspiration away from the head.

Nylon thermo fixed straps, have soft lateral spacers where these straps are in contact with the skin, giving excellent ventilation and comfort and there is a quick release buckle. On top of this, KASK has gone beyond the usual minimal consideration of visibility. In addition to the standard reflector stickers on the back, each helmet has reflective strips on every strap.

Team Sky worked closely with Kask on their new time trial helmet to produce an innovative magnetic visor which can be easily removed when the weather turns nasty.

KASK general manager Angelo Gotti explains the process behind the development of Team Sky’s cutting-edge TT helmet.

The development of KASK’s Crono TT helmet showcases how the partnership between team and equipment supplier can work perfectly. Initial work on the helmet began in October 2009, some months before Team Sky’s official launch. The basic brief was for KASK to produce a helmet that was innovative both in terms of the technology behind it and its performance on the road.

KASK general manager Gotti explains that the key aspects that needed to be taken into account were weight, aerodynamics, optimum visibility for the rider and ventilation within the helmet.

Comprising an expanded polystyrene inner shell with a high-strength polycarbonate outer and a leather strap, the Crono TT weighs in at a featherweight 350g. But it’s in its aerodynamic design rather than its weight where the Crono TT really scores, as Gotti explains.

“Testing in a wind tunnel is the best way to ensure optimum performance from a helmet,” he says. “The aim is to study the product in situations of use and not in a static way, so it is a worn by a rider on his bike with multidirectional air currents coming at him. Consequently, we can assess how it performs in what are effectively real conditions.”

Ensuring optimum visibility was also essential. Time trial visors have a tendency to fog up when riders are making a maximum effort. Gotti and his development team got around this potential problem by fitting an anti-fog and scratch-resistant visor that is fully integrated with the helmet. “It is designed to optimise the CX (coefficient of aerodynamic drag),” says Gotti. “This is achieved by offering a perfect fit to the helmet with a magnetic locking device that is easy to use and can be replaced. That ease of use becomes especially important if the rider wants to remove the visor when riding, as this can be done simply and once pushed back it is secured in a perfect aerodynamic position.”

Ventilation is via six small ducts in the front interior of the helmet and via four more at the rear. Also fully compliant with European safety laws, the Crono TT was first supplied to Team Sky prior to the start of the 2010 Giro d’Italia. It could not have had a more impressive debut, as Bradley Wiggins powered to victory in the race’s opening prologue time trial in Amsterdam.

Gotti describes the Crono TT’s ideal user as “a high-performance athlete who demands the most of every detail in order to achieve important results both on road and on the track.” He adds that the helmet will be used exclusively by Team Sky and British Cycling until the 2012 London Olympics, after which it will become available to the public.
