The ULTRAMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS is an athletic odyssey of personal rediscovery; as such, it is the next step in the endurance challenge of being human. Covering a total distance of 320 miles (515 kilometers), on the Big Island of Hawaii, it requires that each participant complete a 6.2 mile (10 K) open ocean swim, a 261.4 mile (421 K) cross-country bike ride, and a 52.4 mile (84 K) ultra-marathon run.
The Ultraman World Championship is a three-day, 515 km (320 mile) annual endurance race held on the Big Island of Hawaii. The race is divided into three stages over three days: The first is a 6.2-mile (10-km) ocean swim from Kailua Bay to Keauhou Bay, followed by a 90-mile (145-km) cross-country bike ride, with vertical climbs that total 6,000 feet. Stage two is a 171.4-mile (276-km) bike ride from Volcanoes National Park to Kohala Village Inn in Hawi, with total vertical climbs of 4,000 feet. Stage three is a 52.4-mile(84-km) double-marathon, which starts at Hawi and finishes on the beach at the Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area. Each stage must be completed within 12 hours or less. The swim portion of stage one must be completed in 5.5 hours or less. Participants who do not reach the finish lines within the time limits are disqualified.
This event attracts athletes who seek to explore the extreme in physical and mental abilities. The race is limited to 40 athletes on an invitation-only basis and attracts participants from around the world, including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Italy, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Sweden, Slovenia and the United States. Racers must have reached their 20th birthday prior to the start of stage one. Each racer must be accompanied by an individual support team of at least two people over the entire course. Many support team members are volunteers from the Big Island community.

2014 Day 1
2014 Ultraman World Championships Day 1 Race Report
The 30th edition of the Ultraman World Championships started from Kailua bay this morning under gorgeous conditions. The 38 swimmers taking on the 6.2 mile swim were blessed with calm waters, little wind and blue skies.
The first swimmer to emerge from the water on the shores of Keauhou Bay was Craig Percival (Australia, 43) with a time of 2:31:50. Percival had a lead of just over 12 minutes over second place swimmer, Marty Raymond (Canada, 52) with a time of 2:43:04 and third place swimmer and first place female, Julie Shelley (USA, 38) who came in with a time of 2:53:17.
The fourth swimmer of the day was also the second place female, Yasuko Miyazaki (Japan, 37) who completed the 10K distance in a time of 2:57:20 followed by the fifth place finisher and third overall male swim finisher, Tobias Winnemoeller (Germany, 35) who had a 3:02:09 clocking.
All 38 swimmers were able to complete the distance with the final swimmer being Stacey Shand (Canada, 35) who came in at the 5:12:18 mark.
Once out of the water, the athletes mounted their trusty bikes and began the 90 mile ride to Volcano. Again, blue skies were on order for the day although the winds picked up as they passed the South Point area and began the 4000’ foot climb to the finish at Maunale’o Place.
Keeping his solid grip on his first place standing for the day, Percival posted an impressive bike split of 5:33:10 to give him a Day 1 total time of 8:05:00. Making a move from 5th out of the swim to second overall on the day, Winnemoeller clocked a 5:43:04 bike to finish in 8:45:13 on the day. Also, clocking a split of 5:43:04 and making a huge move up the field was Tony O’Keefe (Canada, 53) for a Day 1 total of 8:49:47 for third overall on the day. Peter Kotland (Czech Republic, 42) completed the 90 mile bike in a time of 5:37:02 to move up to fourth place with a total time of 8:51:17. Rounding out the top 5 in the men’s field was Nick Logan (USA, 33) with a 5:38:12 bike giving him a total time of 8:57:00 for the Day 1 course.
The women’s race was quite exciting with Shelley finishing first on the day with a 6:17:03 bike to post a total time of 9:10:20. Miyazaki held on to her second place standing with a 6:19:59 bike split for a 9:17:19 Day 1 total. Kathy Winkler had the fastest women’s bike split on the day with a 6:15:35 to keep her in third place in the women’s division.
Andre Kajlich, (USA, 35) the only para-triathlete in the field, had an excellent 6.2 mile swim and exited the water in 3:21:09. He became the first hand-cycle athlete to complete the 90 mile Day 1 bike course in a time of 7:02:45 giving him a total time of 10:23:54 placing him in 15th overall going into Day 2.
Unfortunately, 2 athletes were unable to complete the 90 mile bike section in the 12 hour time limit. Both participants will be allowed to continue the next 2 days.
The Day 2 course of the Ultraman World Championships will start at 6:30am and offers the athletes a scenic 171.4 mile tour from Volcano, through the Puna district, into Hilo and up the Hamakua Coast to Waimea. The final section is over Kohala Mountain Road finishing at Kamehameha Park in Kapa’au.

2014 Day 2
2014 Ultraman World Championships Day 2 Race Report
The gorgeous conditions that welcomed the 38 athletes attempting the 30th edition of the Ultraman World Championships vanished as they rode 271.4 miles along the east side of the island. Continuous rain and gusty winds made for some treacherous roads and difficult headway.
Despite the nasty weather, Craig Percival (Australia, 43) was able to conquer the course in a time of 7:47:15 to increase his lead to 54 minutes over Tobias Winnemoeller. Winnemoller, (Germany, 35) finished second on the day with an 8:01:03 bike split for a two day total of 16:46:16. Making a big move up the standings and finishing third on the day was Peter Kotland (42, Czech Republic) with a time of 8:03:10 to bring his two day total to 16:45:27 and push him into third place overall going into Day 3. Fourth on the day with a clocking of 8:08:01 was Tony O’Keeffe (53, Canada) giving him a solid grip on fourth place with a total time of 16:57:48. The fifth finisher for the day was Jochen Dembeck, (Germany, 47) with an 8:14:43 to move up to 7th overall.
The women’s field also had impressive performances in spite of the inclement weather. Julie Shelley (USA, 38) retained her first place standing from Day 1 by posting a 9:09:22 bike split for the day giving her a combined total of 18:19:42 and an approximately 18 minute lead over Kathy Winkler. Winkler (USA, 48) finished the day in second in 9:17:50 to move her into second place with a total time of 18:37:33. Yasuko Miyazaki (Japan, 37) was the third place female finisher on the day clocking a 9:28:33 for the 171.4 mile course and placing her in third overall in the women’s field with a total time of 18:45:52. The difference between the top three women overall is just over 26 minutes which means the double marathon could provide some shuffling of the overall results.
Andre Kajlich, (USA, 35) completed the Day 2 course in a time of 9:28:30 to become the first hand-cyclist to complete the course. Andre’s two day total is 19:52:24 to put him in 14th place overall.
Unfortunately, people were not able to overcome tough conditions and some health issues and dropped from the event. These athletes are still welcome to start the Day 3 double marathon and complete the event as participants. The 52.4 mile run will start in Hawi at 6:00am and the first finishers could be at the Old Airport park around 11:30am.

2014 Ultraman World Championships Day 3 and Final Race Report
The soggy conditions that the athletes faced on Day 2 were replaced with continued windy conditions and blazing sun. The competition on the run was as hot as the temperatures
Defending overall champion, Miro Kregar (Slovenia, 52) ran a blistering 6:27:30 for the double marathon to win the run portion of the event and move into fourth in the overall standings for the three days with a 24:18:48. Tobias Winnemoeller (Germany, 35) burnt up the course with a 6:41:58 clocking to finish second on the day and overcome the 54 minute deficit he faced coming into the third stage. Winnemoeller finished first overall with a total time of 23:28:14. Craig Percival (Australia, 43) who had been the leader on the first two days ran a 7:41:45, 7th on the day, to take second overall with a combined time of 23:34:00. Andre Kajlich was also burning up the run course. Kajlich chose to use an everyday wheelchair rather than a racing chair so as not to have “an unfair advantage over the other athletes. Kajlich became the first hand-cycle athlete to complete the Ultraman World Championships course by rolling to a run time of 6:49:31 for a combined time of 26:41:55.
The real hot competition was in the women’s field where Yasuko Miyazaki (Japan, 37) ran a new course record time of 6:54:57 becoming the first woman to go under 7 hours on the 52.4 mile course at the Ultraman World Championships. This incredible performance rocketed Miyazaki into first place woman overall with at total time of 25:40:49.
