DAY 1 - HERE THE STORY OF THE FIRST DAY OF THE TRIPLE DECAIRONMAN ITALY 2013
09 Set 2013 14:27
The opening day of the first Ironman world record attempt, 30 Ironman in 30 days offered many spectacular tales straight from the outset. The cloudy sky in the morning gave way to a high humidity until around 11 am when the first drops of rain began to fall, and this turned into a major problem for the athletes who were making the rounds of the 180 km cycling. A couple of slips caused abrasions and bruises, but fortunately nothing serious – apart from Kim Greisen who entered the event as one of the favourites. As a result of a heavy fall, probably very strong, Kim seriously damaged his hip and his left leg. But the Dane is not new to these competitions and he succeeded in completing the trials of the day. Limping around the 900 metres course in the Parco La Quiete without groaning and moaning, Kim drew big rounds of applause every time he crossed the finish line. This is what an Ironman is all about.

But Kim Greisen is not alone. Yesterday - or perhaps I should say today - John Price, a 58-year-old American from Virginia finished running at 3.40 in the morning. He ended the bike ride around 7.30 pm and then set out on the marathon and never even slackened his pace. John is not new to this kind of competition as he recently walked across America, Coast to Coast (over 5000 km) in 87 days! So walking 42 km last night was not a problem. Then he went to sleep for a couple of hours and this morning, on time and with a smile on his face, he was present at the start lively as ever.

Both the women present in the race performed very well. Thea Henriksen, Denmark, swam very well yesterday morning and rode safely on the bike and started running at around 5.30 pm. Alexandra Meixner, Austria, 42, took a little longer than Thea to complete the opening day. Meixner is actually doing the deca but not being able to take leave at the end of the month, Meixner has started out with the athletes of the triple deca and will end her competition after the first ten days.

Some curiosities about the rankings: The best in swimming yesterday, as expected, was Jose Manuel Lopez who checked out of the pool having taken 56 minutes to complete the 76 50-meters laps Thus, evidently, the Spaniard was the first athlete to begin cycling. The best rider, at least until his devastating crash, was Dane Kim Greisen who consistently rode the fastest laps, even in the last two rounds following his ruinous crash. Greisen finished the bike in just over five hours and behind him came Steven Harvey, trailing by just over 10 minutes. When it came to running, there was no way to beat the strong Hungarian Jozsef Rokob, 35 years from Gyor, who covered the 42 kilometres in 3 hours and 50 minutes, a truly amazing feat considering what he had done before .

To fully understand the severity of the fall suffered by Kim Greisen just consider the fact that the Dane ran - or rather walked - along the 42 km in 6 hours and 50 minutes, which would otherwise have been unthinkable for Kim who still finished the day in seventh place. The best yesterday was Kamil Suran, born in the Czech Republic but a long-time resident in, Illinois, USA. The 38-year- old athlete was performing excellently straight from the morning swimming in the third fastest time getting in and out of the tub shortly after the one hour mark. He did well on the bike, but not as well as his opponents, but subsequently he was able to recover well during the running thanks to his entire family that took turns at his side to keep him company for the duration of his running. Kamil ended the day in 11 hours 25 minutes and 48 seconds, besting Rokob by 17 minutes. Steven Harvey, 36, from Plymouth in the UK, was third on the opening day. Harvey is an excellent swimmer and a little bit slower when it comes to running. Thanks to his splendid performance in swimming, Lopez got the fourth position ahead of Ferenc Szonyi: The Hungarian suffered badly from gastritis but managed to recover well, and by gritting his teeth he managed to minimize his losses.

Through their performances yesterday, all the athletes proved that they are all ironmen possessing an ironmind!

SURAN GANA HOY, FRENTE A SZONYI
