Ruben Ruzafa and Lesley Paterson captured the XTERRA France elite titles in Xonrupt, Gerardmer, France.
Ruzafa took his third straight XTERRA European Tour win this year and his 22nd XTERRA major victory in 27 races since winning the XTERRA World Championship in 2008. Paterson’s win was her second this year after capturing XTERRA Tahiti in May and the 14th XTERRA major of her career.

Men
Ben Allen of Australia led the swim in 17:01 which gave him a 32 seconds lead on Veit Hönle of Germany and just under 2 minutes over top contenders Ruzafa, Bradley Weiss of South Africa and Yeray Luxem of Belgium. By the halfway point of the mountain bike segment, Ruzafa took the lead thanks to a race-best 1:02:37 segment. By the finish of the second lap, Ruzafa powered through to a by-far-best 1:59:45 bike split which was 6:20 better than the next-best effort by Weiss and gave him an equal cushion over the South African starting the run.
“I like this course and I like this race,” said Ruzafa, who has won it three years in a row. “It is very technical and this is where I am at my best. I rode very good today and was able to control everything.”After a 4th-best 45:52 trail run, Ruzafa cruised home in 3:07:00 with a 5:49 margin on Yeray Luxem of Belgium, who posted a race-best 44:22 split to pass Weiss (46:24 run) for the runner-up position, 1:07 in front of 3rd place Weiss.
“I came out of the water with Ruben but he was so strong on the bike I could not keep up with him,” said Weiss. “Then on the run Yeray surprised me. He was going so fast and when he passed me I knew I must settle for third.”Hönle finished in 3:19:19, 4:23 behind Weiss for 4th place, and 19 seconds in front of 5th place Damien Guillemet of France.
Women
"XTERRA France lives up to its reputation...the beauty and the true toughness,” said Paterson, a 2-time XTERRA World Champion and an ITU Cross Triathlon World gold medalist. “I felt great all day and just so grateful to be able to compete against great gals and in one of the best XTERRAs I’ve ever experienced.”
Jacqui Slack of Great Britain led the swim in 19:24 which gave her a 57 seconds lead on Paterson, 58 seconds on XTERRA European Tour leader Brigitta Poor of Hungary and 2:28 on Renata Bucher of Switzerland.
Paterson quickly shredded Slack’s lead, but saved her biggest push for the second lap of the mountain bike leg. “I knew this was a long race so I took it very easy on the first lap of the bike,” said Paterson. “I heard Renata was close to me so I pushed really hard on the second lap and got a good gap.”
Paterson’s women’s-best 2:24:09 held the lead, but Renata Bucher’s 2nd-best 2:24:25 bike leg brought her to second place, within 1:47 of the flying Scot. Paterson’s women’s-best 51:09 run brought her home in 3:38:29 with a 4:08 margin of victory over Bucher (53:44 run) and 9:34 over 3rd-place Helena Erbenova of the Czech Republic (52:40 run).
“I was so disappointed and sad after Switzerland,” said Bucher, who finished 4th in her home country last weekend. “I rode good today and the race was long, so I was able to make enough time to keep second place on the run.”
Erbenova had a good run to make the podium, but rued her swim. “My swim was just terrible today,” said the reigning European Tour Champion, who came out of the water four minutes behind Paterson and two minutes behind Bucher. “I worked hard to move up into third, and am very happy with it.”
